The Brief

South Eastern railways approached Ally Structures to solve the problem of the existing steps and work platforms being left too close to the parked trains potentially causing damage to the rail stock.

Ally Structures beat its competitors with an innovative but simple guide system to eliminate the risk of damage to the trains.

The order includes the supply of 18 new mobile work platforms, 2 mobile overhead gantries for the maintenance of the air conditioning units in the roof of the train, six 11m long fixed platforms for safer access to the driver cab area and the modification and painting of 12 existing units to fit the new guide system. Ally Structures installation team installed 1400m of guide system along 5 sets of track. Electrical isolation was added the track and platforms for operator safety

The Product

The gantries comprise of aluminium construction with GRP steps and flooring, all platforms will be powered coated in the depot colours and fixed to the new guide system.

The access systems are used to ensure safe access to all areas of a 4 and 8 car train, speed up production and enhance the excellent production facilities within the depot.

Ally Structures will design, manufacture and install the complete access systems with its own direct staff based in their factory in Chester.

Paul Butt Director says “we have drawn on our experience in providing aviation systems and mobile gantries for many industries to provide an innovative and competitive system of high quality.

Summary

The work platforms performed perfectly and continue to give good service showing the robustness and excellent quality of workmanship and materials that were used to produce these products. Many more work platforms steps and gantries have subsequently been ordered for the rail depot.
